Solar Water Heating
At first glance, a solar hot water tank may not seem as exciting as a solar electric (PV) system that can power your computer or cell phone. But when it comes to lowering your energy bills, it’s worth a closer look.
Water heating accounts for a greater percentage of the average home’s energy use than all other appliances combined. A solar water heater or solar thermal system can provide up to 80 percent of that heating power using clean, free energy from the sun. A solar power hot water heater system harnesses the power of the sun more efficiently than most PV panels. Panel for panel, it is also less expensive to install. For many households, that makes solar water heating the most cost-effective solar energy on the market.
What is a solar water heater?
Just like a solar PV system, a solar water heating system uses panels or collectors to harvest energy from the sun. However, instead of silicon wafers, these panels consist of a series of fluid-filled tubes under glass. The sun directly heats this fluid, which circulates through a domestic hot water storage tank. A heat exchanger is used to transfer heat from the fluid into the hot water while keeping the two liquids separate. The cooled fluid then returns to the rooftop panels to absorb more heat, while the water in the tank is ready for household use.
A typical solar water heater will supply three-fourths of an average family’s water heating needs. To ensure an uninterrupted supply of hot water, a conventional gas or electric water heater (such as your existing one) remains on site as backup.
Solar water heating systems typically slash a home’s water heating bills by 50-80 percent. The more hot water you are using now, the faster your solar water heating system will pay for itself. Solar hot water is an especially smart choice for large families, and for businesses that use a lot of hot water, such as restaurants and breweries.
Solar Water Heating Installation Services
Since 2002, we have installed hundreds of solar water heaters throughout Northern Virginia, Washington D.C. and Maryland. You might say we’ve become pretty good at it!
As a matter of pride, we make a point of selling and installing only American-made solar hot water products. We exclusively use Heliodyne solar water heaters, which are made in the United States. We feel that they are a better value than some of the cheap products made in other countries.
We are also committed to outstanding service. Our contractors don’t just sell solar water heaters, we install them strictly in accordance with state and local codes — and with attention to every last detail of safety, efficiency and appearance.
Solar Water Heating: Maryland and Other Mid-Atlantic States
Renewable Energy Corporation offers solar water heater installation throughout our service area of Maryland, Delaware, Washington D.C., northern and southern Virginia and southern Pennsylvania. Solar thermal panels are more tolerant of light shading than PV panels, so they work well even on the cloudy days we often experience in our region. They can also be used on some sites that are not suitable for a solar electric system.
How Much Can You Save With Solar Hot Water?
